Being poor in the US better than living in a war torn country.

The comparison here is not between America and the roughest countries in the world, but about how it could be amongst the fairest and most just. Especially given the abundance of wealth.

Regarding unions - one could argue that "top management" of an organisation are equally oligarchical. It is the ability for workers to organise collectively that lets them challenge the otherwise unequal relationship between workers and owners and obtain many wins like annual leave or safer working conditions.

The argument that unions cost jobs is an incomplete one.

Unionised workers often are more productive (due to less turnover, higher engagement, and better decisions by management that consider on the ground realities). If these workers are paid more, they both pay more in terms of tax and spend more as consumers - which in turn creates more jobs elsewhere.
