I’d further add that being judged is important — as it provides feedback from the community on how acceptable your behaviour is.

The trick is — some people’s opinions should matter more to you than others.

US President Obama for example faced a lot of judgement. Some from those who doubted he was born in America — should not have weighed upon him, whereas on other matters — he should not have ignored the concerns of his constituents.

Similarly, we must ask ourselves: who are our constituents, whose opinions and judgements should we care about. Their opinions to should be considered as a bellwether to keep us in line.
