Another point of consideration is that I believe some (possibly many) women who wished to commit suicide could not — for church doctrine suggested eternal damnation for those who took their own life.

Killing an unbaptised child would entrust it to the mercy of God, and the murderess herself would be hung by the state (and thus killed without suicide).
