Thanks for sharing an honest response to a tragic event.
I’d raise two points to consider:
1) we spend hundreds of millions of dollars every year around the world to preserve our buildings, artworks and other physical relics. Money that could instead be spent on “helping the poor”. Should all this seemingly wasteful spend on inanimate objects stop?
2) The line of thinking above suggests that the solution to the poverty situation is money; when in fact it is far more complex than that (e.g eliminating corruption is more a governance issue than money itself), etc.
