The colonial legacy in Mexico is an interesting one.

The borders, states, and identity of modern Mexico is also anchored largely around the Spanish Viceroyalty of New Spain. Itself a Spanish invention.

Were it not for the Spanish there would be no Mexico. The lingua franca of the region would not be Spanish, Catholicism would not be the predominant religion, and the area would have either be composed of a patchwork of small city-states (like those of the Maya and around Oaxaca), or be conquered by the British or the US.

Spain may need to apologise for their actions, but does seeking such an apology imply the Mexican people lament their existence in their current form?

This would be different to say Peru (where the Incas were decimated) or Brazil (where many slaves were transported), with both populations, clearly better off being “left alone”.
